Ch 5.) Splitting Hairs: Linking Crime to Hair

Investigators often find hairs, both human and animal, at crime scenes. Medical Examiners must determine whether the hair came from the victim, the perpetrator, a visiting friend, other family member, or the family pet. As you have now learned there are many properties that can distinguish one hair from another. Question: 1. Briefly summarize in a short paragraph a crime that has been solved with the help of hair analysis. 2. The John Vollman case is a world-famous case. Gaetane Bouchard (16 years old) was murdered in Edmundston, NB, Canada by John Vollman (20 years old) from Madawaska, Maine in 1958. There were a few major pieces of evidence uncovered. One of which was a single hair. Why is this such a famous case?

Some say Napolean died from arsenic poisoning, however later studies of his hair and his family members hair prove that he did not die from arsenic poisoning. All his life he was exposed to arsenic and consumed small amounts, but all being non-leathal. The metal found in his hair was said to be wallpaper paste, hair oinmnent, or gunpowder. His real cause of death is still undetermined however some figure he died of stomach cancer.

  2. 1.) One of the most famous murders of all time involves hair analysis. The OJ Simpson murders show evidence that his hair was found of Goldman's shirt. DNA analysis of blood on the gloves was proven to be a mixture of Simpson’s, Nicole’s, and Ronald Goldman’s. The gloves also contains particles of Goldman’s hair and carpet fibers from Simpson’s Bronco. It seems obvious that Simpson had something to do with the murders and of course hair was involved.
2.)The Vollman case was so important because it was the first time that neuton activation analysis. They used NAA they compared Vollman and Gaetane to the single hair that was found. They found that the hair had come from Vollman.

They looked in the mothers car and they found hair with the victims blood on it. Laboratory tests were done on the hair and the mitochondrial DNA matched the jealous ex-girlfriend. She was tried and convicted of killing the mother and her baby.

The Charles Albright case the Texas Eyeball serial killer seemd to be falling apart. They found some evidence but nothing crucial to linking him to any of the crimes. They found Pornographic magizines and other things but nothing that was great evidence. They then found a blanket that they analyzied to having hair on it.Albright agreed to let the police take hair and blood samples from him, and Linch soon called Westphalen to tell him that hair found on one of the bodies was consistent with Albright's hair samples. In addition, hair found on the blankets from his truck appeared to match hair from the prostitutes. This was considered class evidence and although it wasnt individual the court agreed and proved him guilty.

    Question # 2
The John Vollman case was a very special and unique case indeed. There was some evidence linking John Vollman to the death of Gaetane Bouchard, but astoundingly there was a piece of hair that was in her hand. The opened up her hand and found that single hair and the hair from vollman were subjected to a neutron activation anaylsis. This was the first time this system was used for forensic science hair anaylsis.

  6. Q1) Alma Tirtsche, was found strangled to death. Her naked body was wrapped in a blanket and dumped in an alley. Colin Russ became a suspect. Police then searched his house and took two other blankets from his house. The blankets were sent for hair analysis. They found that is was most likely female because it was very long. It also had so much much pigmentation, meaning it was from a young person. Also some hair roots showed that they had been pulled out through violence. Colin Ross was found guilty.

The John Vollman case is a world-famous case because they used neutron activation analysis, which is a complicated technique in which the sample is first placed in a capsule, then insertedin a nucleur reactor and bombarded with neutrons in order to make it radioactive. In the Vollman case it was the first time neutron activation analysis was used.

The John Vollman case is world wide famous because this was the first case in which atmoic evidence led to a conviction. To examine the hair prosecuters used neutron activation analysis (NAA), which is a form of nuclear analysis that showed Vollman's hair and the hair from the crime scene appeared to be a match. This piece of evidence ultimately made Vollman switch his plea from Not Guilty to Guilty.

Charles Albright was a serial killer. His crime started at the age of 13. His crimes grew from just stealing to murder. Charles killed three people. They were all had one thing in common, their eyes had been romoved from there head. They only thing that linked Charles to the case was a clump of hair that was left on one of the victims body. With the hair that they found was enough to put charles behind bars for life.
    Q2)
This case is world famous for one reason. When they found the hair in the victims they used neurtron activation analysis(NAA) to prove that his hair was a match. After they looked closely at the hair they found it matched some of the same properties. With the NAA evidence they were able to convict Vollman and this was the first case which atomic evidence lead to a conviction

In 1921, in Melbourne, Australia an officer found a young girl that has been strangled and bludgeoned to death. Her naked body bruised but oddly free from blood, had been wrapped up in a blanket and dumped. The savage nature of the rape confirmed that this was no ordinary killer. The victim was identified as Alma Tirtsche, who had been reported missing the previous day. The absence of blood meant that the girl had been killed elsewhere than transported to Gun Alley. The victims body had been carefully washed and dried. Colin Ross was able to reveal details about the murder that only a killer could have known. Two blankets were found at Ross's home one they found reddish-gold hair, the same color as the victim's. Dr. Charles Taylor a government industrial chemist did the analysis on the hair. His first task was to establish that the hairs were human; this was easily acheived. A high degree of pigmentation indicated an age range of 13-30 years. Some of the hairs were pulled out by the roots, a common feature of assaults, others were broken off. At Ross's trial, he was found quilty and hanged on April 24, 1922.

  28. One of the most famous cases of poisoning may have been solved by modern technology and hair. Napoleon Bonaparte was the emperor of France. He waged war on most of Europe during his reign. In the end he was captured and exile to a small island in 1821. Napoleon Bonaparte was and is famous for the paintings done of him showing him with his hand inserted into his shirt covering his stomach. This habit of putting his hand over his stomach led to the belief that he may have had stomach cancer. His father had died of stomach cancer many years before.
Before he died he wrote that he believed he was being poisoned by his English captors. When he died his valet kept a lock of his hair. The lock of hair survived and with the advent of new technology was tested using neutron activation analysis. The results showed that the emperor had been subjected to heavy dosed of arsenic. 60. Everyone knows about the OJ Simpson case and where he was accused of killing his ex-wife and Ron Goldman. They were able to obtain a hat and in the hat they found hair that belonged to OJ Simpson. They also found hair on Goldman's shirt. It is obvious that Simpson had a presence at the crime scene.

This case is famous because it was the first that used neutron activation analysis. They were able to conclude that the hair had to come from Vollman and not from Gaetane.

  61. 1. In 2008, there was a double homicide in a dorm room. The two young men killed were Alex Ouellette and Jim Harris. Alex was shot in the head and Jim was strangled to death. When officers got on the crime scene, there was much evidence available for them to solve the crime. One piece of evidence was the murderer's hair. Jim had a big chunk of the hair in his hand. This proved a sign of struggle. The hair was used to determine that the suspect's race was Caucasian. The follicular tag was present n the hair sample which contained nuclear DNA. At this point, the main suspect was Matt Fortunato. Investigators compared the sample found at the crime scene to Matt's hair. He was proven guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
    2. This is such a famous case because it was the first case to use neutron activation analysis. This is when a hair has many neutrons. The neutrons collide with the components of trace elements and make them emit gamma radiation of a certain energy level. This way, investigators can measure every part of a hair sample, no matter how small. In a single hair, fourteen different elements can be identified and this is why this case is so famous. The suspect was convicted with one piece of hair. Hair can reveal a whole bunch of things about a person; the presence of poison or dye, the type of hair, and maybe sometimes even racial differences. In the Vollman case, the piece of hair was matched to him because of the ratio of sulfur radiation to phosphorus, using this neutron activation analysis. This use of scientific technique is still used today and although only used with class evidence, it can greatly narrow down suspects.

Once they figured out who he was, they were able to figure out who his killers were.

2.) The John Vollman case became world famous, because it was the first time that neutron activation analysis was ever used to solve a crime. A single strand of hair was found wrapped in Gaetane's hand and when the used NAA, they discovered that the hair was not hers, but John Vollmans.

  66. In the Heather Barnett Murder case hair was used to lead investigators to other similar murder cases resulting in locating the murderer. When Heather Barnett, was brutally killed and shockingly mutilated at her home in November 2002, the murderer left a lock of someone else’s hair in her right hand. Detectives from Dorset Police reported that several women had come forward to say that an unknown person had cut their hair while they were traveling on buses in Heather’s home town of Bournemouth. When the hair was tested these things were discovered about the owner of the hair. The person lived in the United Kingdom,
the person had taken a trip to the Valencia/Almeria area of Spain or the Perpignan area of France for up to six days about 11 weeks before the hair was taken, the person had visited urban Tampa in Florida, USA for just over a week about a fortnight before their hair was taken, the person changed diets twice in the three months before having their hair cut.Apparently leaving another person's hair in his latest victims hand was his signature and this lead detectives to a 1993 case in Italy. A thirteen year old girl had been kidnapped and never found and at the beginning of 2010 her mummified remains were found in a church in Italy. On May 20th, 2010, detectives interrogated a man Danilo Restivo, and charged him with the murder of Heather.

The Gaetane Bouchard case is famous because it was the first time that NAA hair analysis was used to convict a criminal. NAA stands for Neuron Activation Analysis. NAA tests for the presence and concentration of various elements in a hair sample. In this case, NAA showed that the hair found in Bouchard’s hand contained a ratio of sulfur to phosphorus that was much closer to Vollman’s hair than her own. At the trial Vollman, her boyfriend, confessed to the murder of Bouchard.

  68. 1.) one of the most famous cases that involved hair was the OJ Simpson case. In this case Hairs found in a dark knit cap were similar to Simpson's hairs; fibers on a cap were similar to those in the carpeting of Simpson's Ford Bronco; dark blue cotton fibers were found on Goldman. You would think that this is a dead giveaway that OJ killed his ex wife. The defense said “Hairs mean nothing more than assailant may have been black, as is roughly 10 percent of Los Angeles' population; also pointed to hairs that appeared to contain no dandruff, while Simpson's hair sample had some dandruff; no dark blue sweat suit was ever found; evidence could have been cast about the scene when a detective unfurled a blanket from Ms. Simpson's home to cover her body.” As you can see that even tho there is hair evidence they can't convict somebody because of it because it is not individualized.

  70. A 1977 case was solved years later due to new DNA testing methods. A Rubidoux bartender was murdered and there were no witnesses. The only evidence was some hair found clumped in the victims hand and a testimony saying the suspect was the last person seen with the victim, and they were arguing at the time. The victim was stabbed 20 times with a steak knife and had been hit four times in the head with a blunt object. The hair was found clenched in the victim's hand, and was believed to have come from the suspect, but the laboratory at the time was not able to match the hair samples to Wright. The hair was sent earlier this year to Orchid Cellmark, a private lab in Texas, for testing, he said. The DNA test confirmed the hair found in the victim's hand belonged to Wright, according to Brown.

The John Vollman case was an important one because it helped hair become a more valuable form of evidence. One piece of evidence was hair found in the victims hand. At the time neutron activation analysis just came out and was used to test the hair. The results showed that the hair was most likely John Vollman's and helped push the jury over the edge to convict Vollman. After this hair testing in this method helped solve many crimes.
